Hill Shield
Cricket Tournament
The Hill Shield Tournament for
cricketing excellence has been revived
during the year 2000-01. This Shield was
originally instituted by the erstwhile
princely state of Limbdi in 1910 and was
named after the local Political Agent. This
tournament has been the nursery for famous
names in Indian cricket namely Dulip Singhji,
Vinoo Mankad, Salim Durrani, Karsan Ghavri
and many others.
The Limbdi State conducted the tournament
until 1947. Thereafter it was taken over by
the Education Department, but due to a
variety of reasons it became defunct in
1989. This is a school-based tournament in
which more than 300 schools participated as
soon as it is revived. The tournament was
organized at the district, zonal and state
levels and the semi and finals were played
at the international test cricket venue at
Motera stadium near Gandhinagar. It remains
to be seen whether this will help produce a
cricketer from Gujarat to play for India at
Test and One Day International series.
