Objectives and Performances
Popularising Sports Culture
Historically
different schemes were formulated at
different times, the effect of which has
been to catalyse spread of culture of sports
in different segments of society. Of these,
four schemes are school oriented, inclusive
of one scheme that exclusively targets rural
schools. One belongs to the Education
department that offers sports equipment with
coaching in the schools. This scheme is
being executed by the SAG on behalf of the
Education Department at its request. One
recent scheme targets women in general to
equip them with self-defence training. One
more scheme is specifically meant for taluka
level popularisation of yoga and fitness
centres and is aimed at general population.
The performances of these schemes are
outlined below with reference to the final
output of the schemes.
-
Vacation camps
This scheme was devised at the
instance of the Chief Secretary during
1998. The idea was to offer free
coaching in different games to school
children in their vacations. During
2008-2009, 25 vacation camps were held
for the school children offering them
opportunities during their vacations to
learn and participate in different
sports disciplines.
-
Assistance to rural schools
In this scheme one school per taluka
is selected for assistance. Total 102
rural schools have been coverd under the
scheme so far. A rural school is given
financial assistance for purchase of
sports equipment and development of
play-fields to the tune of about Rs.
50,000 each.
-
Financial assistance to rural Schools :
All rural schools, that is, which
are not located in taluka or districts
HQ qualify for the assistance under the
scheme. The SAG gives one-time financial
assistance to the tune of Rs.50,000/-
for purchase of sports equipment and
development of play fields. To be
eligible to get this assistance the
rural school should have at least 1.75
acres of open land and a Vyayam Shikshak
(physical education teacher) and a
minimum of 100 children on the roll.
Further, the school should have been
registered for the last 5 years. During
2007-08 : 8 rural schools were given
financial assistance for the purchase of
sports equipment and development of
play-fields to the tune of about
Rs.50,000/- each. Total 102 schools are
covered under this scheme.
