Identification of Talent

Every year special tests (motor quality tests to test endurance, strength, speed, agility etc) are held to select candidates (school children, 8-14 age group) for the sports hostels. These tests have been devised by SAI (Sports Authority of India). Four tests are held at Taluka level. In tribal areas, a workshop is organised by the senior coach of all the P.T teachers to conduct tests at each school and selected children are sent directly to the State level screening. At district level, there are 5 tests and at the state level 7 tests. There is a 15 day camp at the state level so that the boys and girls get some practice with the techniques of tests. The full list of tests may be seen at Appendix 10. There is separate selection procedure for Cricket hostel at Porbandar. There are motor quality and skill tests at district level and final selection is made at state level. During 2003-04, 1175 boys participated in district level tests after which 59 went to state level tests of which 14 were selected for admission to the sports hostel at Porbandar which specialises in cricket. The details of tests conducted during 2004-05 are shown in table 14 below.

The SAG has 3 operational hostels the details of which may be seen in table 15 below. The 30 boys and girls will now be allotted amongst these 3 hostels. Devgadh-bariya project has become defunct after the withdrawal of SAI from the project. The Limbdi hostel is ready but we have not received administrative approval from government for the essential staff like rector and coaching staff.
