A Brief
Note on Activities of Gujarat Sahitya
Academy

1 |
For
publication of classical books, book of
new writers, and translated books,
grant-in-aid is given to such writers. The
amount given for this purpose is Rs.
10,000/- for new writers.
The academy undertakes
translations of Indian languages other
than Gujarat. Academy also selects best
book of World Literature and books of
languages like English, French, Russian
will be available to people of Gujarat in
future. Russian Great Writer's, work i.e.g.
Dosfoe Veskely's Crimene and punishment,
or Brothers 'Karam Zor' or works of
Tolstoye or Maxem Gorkey or new well known
writers may be undertaken by Academy for
translation in to Gujarati. Dr. Chadrakant
Topiwala, Dr.Rajnikant Pancholi, Pradip
Khandwala, Amina Amin are some of the best
translators for academy. |

Grant-in-aid
is given as decided by academy to writers
for the publication of books of
child-literature. |
|

Assistance
in the form of books published by the
academy is given to libraries of tribal -
backward area, hostel, resident school and
colleges under this scheme about 100
institutes have been given such
assistance. |

Best books
of Gujarati language published in every
calendar year are given awards by
organizing public programme. In all 30
books of various forms published in year
1998 have been given first award of
Rs.5000/- and second of Rs.3000/- this
year. |

For literary
programme, seminars and workshops literary
institutes in Gujarat State are granted
financial assistance. Various institutes
are given financial assistance for
organizing such programme in the current
financial year. |

Two seminars
are organized on literary contribution of
poet kalapi, on the occasion of his 125th
birth anniversary and books on kalapi's
literature were published. C. C. Mehta's
centenary year was celebrated by academy.
Moreover the birth anniversary of
pre-eminent writer late Shri Umashanker
Joshi is celebrated and his poems were
edited and a collection of poems named 'Chunteli
Kavita' is published. A book titled 'Vidyaprasad'
is published at the occasion of birth
century celebration of Vishnuprasad
Trivedi. |

Seminars are
organized during the year on various
subjects like folk literature, child
literature and literature of Indian Saints
in different areas of the State. |

Every year a
distinguished and eminent literary person,
who has put in the best and outstanding
contribution and long run service in
development and amelioration of Gujarati
language by his creation, critibism or
research work is awarded 'Gaurav Puraskar'
in literature.
Under this scheme the Honourable Writer
awarded 'Gaurav Puraskar' of Rs.25,000/-,
a shawl and symbol of institute. |

For the
publicity of activities of this academy
and for cultivating the good taste for
reading a monthly titled as 'Shabda-Shristi'
is published. It is issued and distributed
to persons interested in literature at
subscription of Rs.50/- only per year. A
special Diwali issue is published
depicting various forms of literature. |

Under the
scheme of book publication, 2 book of
translation, and 6 books of reprint have
been published. Total 16 books have been
Published under editing. |

Aged and
liable for assistance writer residing in
Gujarat is given financial assistance of
Rs.1000/- per month. |

Total 20,000
books have been collected and maintained
in library of academy. |
|
13 |
Every two
year, a writer who has made best
contribution on child literature is
awarded Shri Gijubhai Badheka Gold Medal. |
|
14 |
Every two
year, a novelist who has put in best
literary service by his contribution
depicting national spirit, and glory of
Gujarat and creative work having cultural
value is selected for Shri K.M. Munshi,
Gold Medal. Under this scheme, from 1987
till today-distinguished novelists have
been awarded such medals. |

The book of
yearly ‘Lok Gurjari’ of folk – lore is
published every year. |
